Mumbai Airport Customs Arrests Two Women For Smuggling 2.48 Kg Cannabis

On Sunday, the Mumbai Airport Customs officers arrested two women, including a senior citizen, for allegedly smuggling 2.48 kg of hydroponic cannabis from Bangkok. The women, Manju Devi and A.H. Memon, were intercepted after they had crossed immigration at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Saturday.

According to Customs sources, both passengers had arrived from Bangkok and were travelling together. The baggage carried by both passengers was examined, and a bag being carried by Memon was found to be checked-in and tagged in the name of Manju Devi. Upon further examination, two packets were found concealed in the inner compartments of the trolley bag, containing hydroponic weed (cannabis).

The Customs recovered a total of 2481 grams of weed. Manju Devi, the senior citizen, claimed that she was unaware of the contents in her bag and that it did not belong to her. She stated that her fellow passenger, Memon, had asked her to check-in the said trolley bag in her name. Memon also claimed that she was unaware of the concealment of the cannabis in the trolley bag and that the bag had been handed over to her in Bangkok along with some packets of chocolates.

The preliminary investigation indicates the possible involvement of other persons who are yet to be identified, traced, and apprehended in the commission of the said offence.
