Mumbai FDA Suspends 10 Licences Over Food Safety Violations

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its crackdown on food safety violations in Mumbai. On August 14, the FDA's Mumbai division inspected a Parle Agro warehouse in Chembur and found nearly 1,000 bottles of expired flavoured sparkling drinks. The seized stock was valued at Rs 99,970.

The FDA issued a notice to the company for storing products that were no longer fit for sale or distribution. The licence of the establishment has also been suspended. This action is part of a larger crackdown on food safety violations in the city.

Separately, FDA inspections of quick-commerce facilities uncovered serious lapses in hygiene, storage, temperature control, pest management, and employee safety. The inspections were carried out at various facilities across the city, including those operated by Blink Commerce and Zepto.

At a Blink Commerce facility in Ghatkopar, inspectors found rotten vegetables, cockroach infestation, damaged ceilings, and flooring. Records of employees' medical examinations and drinking-water testing were also unavailable. Similar deficiencies were found at another Blink facility in Malad West.

The FDA also inspected Zepto's facilities in Andheri West and Mulund, where food and non-food products, chemicals, and hazardous substances were not adequately segregated. The facilities also lacked sufficient temperature-control arrangements for perishable and temperature-sensitive products.

In total, the licences of 10 establishments have been suspended, while 14 others have been issued improvement notices. The FDA has initiated penal action under Section 69 of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

The crackdown on food safety violations is a welcome move, as it will help to protect the health and well-being of consumers in Mumbai. The FDA's actions demonstrate a commitment to ensuring that food establishments in the city operate in a safe and hygienic manner.

The inspections also highlight the need for food establishments to prioritize food safety and hygiene. The FDA's findings suggest that some establishments are not taking adequate measures to ensure the safety and quality of their products.

The Maharashtra FDA's crackdown on food safety violations is part of a larger effort to improve food safety in the state. The FDA has been conducting regular inspections of food establishments across the state to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.

In recent years, there have been several instances of food safety violations in Mumbai, resulting in adverse health effects for consumers. The FDA's actions aim to prevent such incidents and promote a culture of food safety in the city.

The suspension of licences and issuance of improvement notices will help to ensure that food establishments in Mumbai operate in a safe and hygienic manner. The FDA's efforts will also help to boost consumer confidence in the food industry.

In conclusion, the Maharashtra FDA's crackdown on food safety violations in Mumbai is a significant step towards ensuring the health and well-being of consumers in the city. The FDA's actions demonstrate a commitment to promoting food safety and hygiene, and will help to prevent adverse health effects for consumers.
