Maharashtra Council Raises MIDC Borrowing Limit To ₹6,000 Crore

The Maharashtra Legislative Council has passed the Maharashtra Industrial Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which increases the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation's (MIDC) borrowing limit from ₹75 crore to ₹6,000 crore. This move is expected to facilitate the land acquisition process for the proposed Purandar Airport project.

Industries Minister Shambhuraj Desai introduced the Bill in the House, stating that the amendment was necessary to meet the project's financial requirements. The enhanced borrowing limit will be used exclusively to pay compensation for land acquired for the airport project. Desai informed the House that around 85 per cent of the required land had already been acquired through mutual consent, and efforts were ongoing to acquire the remaining land through dialogue with farmers.

The minister clarified that the Purandar site was selected based on technical recommendations and a feasibility report prepared by the Airports Authority of India. He assured the House that the State Government was committed to protecting farmers' interests by ensuring a transparent and consent-based land acquisition process. Desai also stated that the amendment was drafted after a comprehensive assessment of the MIDC's financial strength, debt-servicing capacity, and the overall financial viability of the project.

The passage of the Bill is expected to ensure the timely execution of the Purandar Airport project, which is of strategic importance to Maharashtra. The project's viability and approval were thoroughly assessed before the amendment was drafted. The minister appealed for the Bill's passage, which was subsequently approved by the Legislative Council.

The increased borrowing limit is expected to have a positive impact on the development of the Purandar Airport project, which will likely benefit the state's economy and infrastructure. The project's progress will be closely monitored, and the government's commitment to protecting farmers' interests will be crucial in ensuring its successful completion.

In the coming months, the MIDC is expected to utilize the enhanced borrowing limit to acquire the remaining land required for the project. The government's efforts to ensure a transparent and consent-based land acquisition process will be critical in maintaining the trust of farmers and other stakeholders involved in the project. As the project progresses, it is likely to have a significant impact on the region's economy and infrastructure, and its development will be closely watched by stakeholders and observers alike.

The passage of the Bill marks a significant milestone in the development of the Purandar Airport project, and its impact will be felt in the months and years to come. The government's commitment to ensuring the project's timely execution and protecting farmers' interests will be crucial in determining its success. As the project moves forward, it is likely to have far-reaching consequences for the state's economy, infrastructure, and development,
