BMC Commissioner Orders Audit Of Vending Spaces

Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide has ordered a strict audit of licensed vending spaces during the city's footpath reclamation drive.

The decision comes after concerns were raised by corporators over the poor implementation of the initiative. On Monday, Bhide personally inspected the 'Pedestrians First' drive in the Mumbai City area, covering footpath conditions and repair requirements across key locations in South Mumbai.

The inspection focused on the existing condition of footpaths, identifying damaged or deteriorated stretches, and determining the scope of necessary repairs and improvements. Bhide directed officials to improve, beautify and secure footpaths by removing all encroachments and obstructions.

She also stressed protecting tree roots, carrying out proper pruning, and scientifically removing unsafe trees as per regulations. Bhide instructed vendors to operate strictly within designated areas, without obstructing pedestrian movement, and to maintain cleanliness.

During the inspection, Bhide verified hawker licences and directed officials to improve pedestrian access around key locations such as Grant Road Railway Station and B. Y. L. Nair Hospital.

The BMC has removed 14 unauthorised structures, 77 hawker obstructions, and nine food trucks from Worli-Prabhadevi footpaths. The civic body is also working to improve waste-management facilities and install 'No Littering' signage.

In the first phase of the drive, 200 footpaths are being targeted, with work underway on 81. So far, nearly 68 km of footpaths have been cleared, with 443 enforcement actions initiated.

The initiative focuses on footpaths connecting railway and Metro stations, schools, colleges, hospitals, and other high-footfall areas. The civic body is clearing encroachments, unauthorised structures, and other impediments to ensure safer and unobstructed pedestrian movement across Mumbai.

The 'Pedestrians First' drive is a significant step towards improving the city's infrastructure and ensuring the safety of pedestrians. With the strict audit of vending spaces and action against violators, the BMC is working to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment in Mumbai.

The success of the drive will depend on the effective implementation of the initiatives and the cooperation of vendors and citizens. As the city continues to grow and develop, it is essential to prioritize the needs of pedestrians and create a safe and accessible environment for all.
