Kunda Bachhav Wins National Teachers' Award

Kunda Jaywant Bachhav, a teacher at Nashik Municipal School No. 18, was awarded the National Teachers' Award 2026 on Teachers' Day.

The award was conferred by President Droupadi Murmu at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on September 5. Bachhav was among 48 school teachers from across India to receive the award, including four from Maharashtra.

Bachhav has worked for over two decades to ensure quality education and equal opportunities for students. She launched an Educational Sponsorship initiative to support girls from economically weaker families, providing financial, educational, and personal support to over 150 girls.

Her efforts have also helped bring several girls back into mainstream education who were at risk of child marriage.

One of Bachhav's innovative initiatives is the 'Knowledge Walls' project, which has transformed 30 walls in the Anandwali area into colourful educational spaces. These walls feature maps, mathematical formulae, English vocabulary, and other educational information, providing students with an opportunity to learn outside the classroom.

Bachhav has also implemented other initiatives, such as Anandwali Shikshan Katta, Smart Attendance, Constitution Snakes and Ladders, and Assessment Snakes and Ladders. These initiatives focus on developing students' understanding of the Constitution, moral values, social awareness, use of technology, and various skills.

Bachhav has worked to connect students with technology and global learning opportunities, including interaction with schools in the US through e-Twinning, STEM education, and the use of digital tools.

She has also contributed to mobilising over ₹55 lakh through community participation and CSR initiatives for the development of the school. The funds were used to improve infrastructure and support the overall development of students.

Bachhav's initiatives have transformed the educational identity of the Anandwali municipal school, with around 800 students now enrolled. Some students are even shifting from private schools to the municipal school, recognizing the school's growing reputation.
