FSSAI Urges Consumers To Report Food Adulteration Through Mobile App

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched a mobile application to encourage consumers to report cases of food adulteration, unhygienic practices, and other food safety concerns.

On July 12, 2026, the FSSAI urged consumers to play an active role in ensuring food safety by reporting any violations through its mobile application. The app allows users to lodge complaints quickly and easily if they come across unsafe or substandard food products.

Users can report issues such as adulterated food, expired products being sold, poor hygiene at food establishments, incorrect labeling, and food safety violations. They can also upload photographs and location details to support their complaints.

The FSSAI has been active recently in regulating food safety in India. The statutory body recently warned against using newspapers for packing or serving food, following an incident in Mumbai where a vendor was caught using newspapers to bundle food items.

The FSSAI and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) launched a joint action against the vendor. The FSSAI also announced the mandatory V logo for vegan foods and set a July 2027 deadline.

The Food Safety Connect app has been developed to strengthen consumer participation in food safety enforcement. Once a complaint is submitted, it is forwarded to the concerned food safety authority for verification and appropriate action.

Consumers can also track the status of their complaints through the application. Apart from filing complaints, the Food Safety Connect app offers several useful services, including checking whether a Food Business Operator (FBO) is licensed or registered with the FSSAI.

Users can access food safety information, stay updated on important advisories issued by the regulator, and access educational resources to help make informed food choices.

The FSSAI has already taken action against food businesses violating food safety norms. For example, the FSSAI issued 9 notices to Swiggy Instamart following multiple consumer complaints alleging violations under the FSS Act 2006.

The FBO has been directed to submit a detailed explanation and compliance report, failing which appropriate legal action will be initiated.

The FSSAI's initiative to encourage consumer participation in food safety enforcement is a significant step towards ensuring that food products in India are safe for consumption.

By reporting food safety concerns through the mobile application, consumers can play a crucial role in preventing food adulteration and promoting a culture of food safety in India.

This move is expected to have a positive impact on the food industry, as it will help to identify and address food safety concerns promptly, thereby protecting the health and well-being of consumers.

In the long run, this initiative is likely to contribute to the development of a robust food safety ecosystem in India, where consumers can have confidence in the safety and quality of the food they eat.
