Supreme Court Has 96,000 Pending Cases

The Supreme Court of India is currently dealing with a significant backlog of cases, with over 96,000 pending before the court.

This information was revealed by Law Minister Arjun Meghwal in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

According to the data from the National Judicial Data Grid, a substantial number of cases have been pending for an extended period. In the Supreme Court, 26 cases have remained pending for over 30 years, while 558 have been awaiting disposal for more than 20 years.

The issue of pending cases is not unique to the Supreme Court, as the total number of pending cases across the country stands at 5.64 crore. This includes cases pending in the Supreme Court, 25 High Courts, and district and subordinate courts.

In the High Courts, 80,660 cases have been pending for more than 30 years. The Law Minister attributed the pendency of cases to several factors, including the complexity of facts, the nature of evidence, and the cooperation of stakeholders such as the Bar, investigating agencies, witnesses, and litigants.

The minister emphasized that the disposal of cases falls within the exclusive domain of the judiciary.

The large number of pending cases highlights the need for efficient and effective management of the judicial system to ensure timely disposal of cases.
