BMC Offers Free Breast Cancer Screening Across Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to organize a citywide free breast cancer screening drive on July 22. This initiative aims to provide free screenings to women aged 30 years and above across all 227 municipal wards in Mumbai.

The screening drive is part of a special public health initiative to mark the birthday of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The BMC has urged all eligible women, including homemakers and working women, to take advantage of the free screening. Early detection is key, as breast cancer accounts for more than one-fourth of all cancers among Indian women.

Each ward will have a dedicated team of healthcare professionals, including two doctors, two nurses, and two health workers, to conduct the screenings. The preliminary examination will take around five minutes and will also include blood pressure and body weight checks. Women who require further evaluation will be referred for mammography at BMC-run hospitals.

The BMC has deployed over 2,000 healthcare personnel for the campaign, including doctors from major and suburban hospitals, as well as specialists from private hospitals and the Indian Medical Association (IMA). The doctors have been trained by the Tata Memorial Centre for breast cancer screening.

BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide has appealed to eligible women to participate in the campaign and prioritize their health. The civic body will also conduct awareness drives through municipal schools, anganwadis, and community health workers to encourage participation.

The screening camps will be held on July 22 from 10 am to 5 pm. Pregnant women have been advised to undergo breast cancer screening at their nearest maternity home or hospital instead of the ward-level camps.
