Nashik Hotel Theft: ₹31.50 Lakh Gold Stolen

An 83-year-old retired female officer from Mumbai, Shobha Pandharinath Sonawane, had her gold jewellery stolen from her hotel room in Nashik. The theft occurred while she was on a pilgrimage in the city, staying at Hotel City Pride on Sharanpur Road.

The stolen gold jewellery weighed 385 grams and was valued at ₹31.50 lakh. It included gold bangles, patlya, mangalsutra, kada, chain, valya, and rings.

Sonawane, a resident of Kandivali East, Mumbai, and a retired officer from the Maharashtra Government's Agriculture Department, had arrived in Nashik on July 14, 2026, for her pilgrimage. She had requested the hotel manager to provide a caretaker to assist her with daily tasks, and the manager had appointed one at a daily wage of ₹500.

After completing her pilgrimage, Sonawane returned to Mumbai on July 20. When she checked her bag on July 21, she found that her gold jewellery was missing. She suspected that it had been stolen by an unidentified person during her stay at the hotel and approached the police to lodge a complaint.

The police have registered a theft case at Sarkarwada Police Station and are investigating the suspected role of the caretaker appointed by the hotel manager. The police are examining the circumstances surrounding the theft and are yet to make any arrests. The stolen jewellery has not been recovered yet.
