Maharashtra Removes ₹2-Lakh Farm Loan Ceiling

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced significant changes to the state's farm loan waiver scheme on Friday. The revised scheme removes the ₹2-lakh outstanding loan ceiling, allowing more farmers to benefit from the program.

The changes aim to provide relief to nearly 56 lakh farmers, with financial assistance worth around ₹36,000 crore. This makes it one of the state's largest farm debt relief programs. The loan waiver for farmers will be increased, and the earlier ₹50,000 eligibility condition has been removed.

The Chief Minister said the earlier proposal would have excluded thousands of farmers whose dues exceeded the threshold. By removing the ceiling, more indebted farmers will be brought under the scheme. The eligibility period for overdue loans has also been extended from the 2025-26 financial year to include loans outstanding till 2026-27.

Fadnavis defended the loan waiver, stating that the objective is not to make farmers dependent on debt relief but to restore their access to institutional credit. He rejected criticism that only a portion of farmers would benefit, asserting that the government has earmarked assistance of ₹36,000 crore for about 56 lakh beneficiaries.

The state provides significant support to the agriculture sector, including an annual electricity subsidy of nearly ₹25,000 crore to farmers. Agriculture-related subsidy schemes together account for an outlay of around ₹95,000 crore.

Maharashtra has implemented major farm loan waiver programs in 2017, 2020, and 2026. The Chief Minister acknowledged concerns over repeated debt waivers but emphasized the need to support farmers.

The revised scheme is expected to benefit a large number of farmers in the state. The government's decision to remove the loan ceiling and extend the cut-off period is a significant step towards providing relief to the farming community.

The farm loan waiver scheme is part of the state's efforts to support the agriculture sector. The government has implemented various initiatives to help farmers, including subsidy schemes and credit programs.

The removal of the ₹2-lakh ceiling is a major relief for farmers who were earlier excluded from the scheme due to the threshold. The extended eligibility period will also allow more farmers to benefit from the program.

The Maharashtra government's decision to revise the farm loan waiver scheme is a significant development in the state's agriculture sector. The changes aim to provide relief to a large number of farmers and support the state's farming community.

In conclusion, the revised farm loan waiver scheme is a major step towards providing relief to Maharashtra's farmers. The removal of the ₹2-lakh ceiling and the extended eligibility period will benefit nearly 56 lakh farmers, making it one of the state's largest farm debt relief programs. The government's support to the agriculture sector is expected to have a positive impact on the state's farming community.
