UPI Transactions Surge 13,000-Fold In A Decade

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has witnessed a significant surge in transactions over the past decade. According to the Ministry of Finance, the annual transaction volume of UPI has increased nearly 13,000-fold from 1.78 crore transactions in FY 2016-17 to over 24,162 crore transactions in FY 2025-26.

The UPI platform was launched on August 25, 2016, by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the regulatory oversight of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Since its inception, UPI has emerged as the backbone of India's digital payments ecosystem and a key driver of financial inclusion.

The value of UPI transactions has also expanded sharply, rising from Rs 0.07 lakh crore in FY 2016-17 to approximately Rs 314 lakh crore in FY 2025-26. This represents a more than 4,000-fold increase over the decade.

The platform has become a major pillar of India's Digital Public Infrastructure, offering an interoperable and real-time payments system that enables seamless person-to-person and person-to-merchant transactions. UPI's scale, reliability, and interoperability have received global recognition, with the International Monetary Fund acknowledging it as the world's largest real-time payment system by transaction volume.

As of 2025, UPI accounted for nearly 49 per cent of global real-time payment transaction volume. The growth momentum has accelerated further in 2026, with monthly UPI transaction volume crossing the 2,300 crore mark for the first time in May.

Institutional participation has also expanded significantly, with the number of banks live on UPI increasing from 44 in FY 2016-17 to 703 by FY 2025-26. This covers public sector banks, private banks, small finance banks, payment banks, and cooperative banks.

UPI has witnessed particularly strong adoption in merchant payments, with person-to-merchant transactions accounting for 63 per cent of total transaction volume. Person-to-person transactions contributed 71 per cent of the overall transaction value.

The data also highlights the widespread use of UPI for small-value everyday payments. Around 86 per cent of person-to-merchant transactions in FY2026 were below Rs 500, while 59 per cent of person-to-person transactions were also below Rs 500.

The significant growth of UPI transactions over the past decade is a testament to the platform's convenience, reliability, and widespread adoption. As India continues to drive digital payments and financial inclusion, UPI is likely to play an increasingly important role in the country's economic landscape.

The Ministry of Finance has acknowledged the significance of UPI in India's digital payments ecosystem, and the platform's global recognition is a testament to its success. As UPI continues to grow and expand, it is likely to have a profound impact on the way Indians make payments and conduct financial transactions.

In conclusion, the surge in UPI transactions over the past decade is a significant milestone in India's digital payments journey. With its widespread adoption, convenience, and reliability, UPI is poised to continue playing a major role in driving financial inclusion and digital payments in India.

The growth of UPI transactions also highlights the importance of digital public infrastructure in driving economic growth and financial inclusion. As India continues to invest in digital public infrastructure, it is likely to have a positive impact on the country's economic landscape.

Overall, the significant growth of UPI transactions over the past decade is a testament to the platform's success and its potential to drive financial inclusion and digital payments in India.
