Kerala Floods Claim 25 Lives, 18,000 Displaced

Severe monsoon flooding in Kerala has claimed at least 25 lives, with four individuals reported missing, according to the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority.

The flooding has displaced over 18,000 residents, forcing hundreds of families into relief shelters. Currently, 18,434 occupants are sheltered across 418 active relief camps, with structural damages rising to 52 completely destroyed houses and 565 partially damaged homes.

Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan paid tribute to R Rajesh, a swimming instructor who lost his life during flood rescue operations in Kannur's Pulingome region. Rajesh made the ultimate sacrifice by giving his life jacket to save another during flash floods in Cherupuzha.

The Chief Minister visited the home of R Rajesh in Thiruvananthapuram to extend solidarity to the grieving household. He also announced immediate financial assistance of Rs 10,000 for every affected household in the flood-hit Pathanamthitta district.

In Pathanamthitta alone, 133 relief camps are sheltering more than 6,400 people, mainly in the Thiruvalla region where floodwaters continue to remain stagnant. The Cabinet has sanctioned a comprehensive disaster relief and mitigation package to support citizens affected by the recent heavy rainfall and natural calamities.

Chief Minister Satheesan emphasized that full administrative and financial powers have been delegated to district authorities to ensure uninterrupted relief distribution. He conducted an on-ground review of relief operations in the flood-hit Pathanamthitta district and met with district officials at the Kozhencherry Rest House in Aranmula.

The Kerala government will also complete the construction of R Rajesh's unfinished house as a tribute to his sacrifice. The government's efforts are focused on providing relief and support to the affected families and rebuilding the damaged infrastructure.
