Mumbai Coastal Road North Project Targets December 2028 Completion

The Mumbai Coastal Road North project, a 60-kilometer long mega project undertaken by the BMC, is expected to be completed by December 2028. The project aims to reduce the travel time from Versova to Bhayandar from 90 to 120 minutes to just 15 to 20 minutes.

The project has been divided into seven packages, including the construction of double elevated roads, roads on stilts in mangrove areas, two cable-stayed bridges, four basket bridges, two twin tunnels, and 10 interchanges. The construction work is being carried out using modern technology.

Package C and D of the project includes the construction of 3.9 km-long twin tunnels running between Mindspace Malad and Charkop Creek. The excavation work for the tunnel has started, and the spare parts of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) are expected to be available in December 2026.

The BMC has received the final approval from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) for the diversion of 103.6554 hectares of forest (mangrove) land for the project. This has allowed the authorities to speed up the mangrove removal and construction activities.

The project is expected to connect the entire coastal belt of Mumbai, including the Mumbai Coastal Road South, Bandra Worli Sea Link, and Bandra Versova Sea Link. This will help to solve the traffic congestion in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and allow smooth, uninterrupted travel from South Mumbai to Bhayandar.

The total project cost is estimated to be around Rs 22,000 crore, and the BMC is working to complete the project within the stipulated time frame. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar has directed the civic officials and consultants to ensure that the work is completed with quality and within the given time frame.

The project also includes compensatory afforestation of 1.37 lakh mangroves on a total of 255 hectares of land. This is being done to offset the loss of mangrove forest land due to the project.

Once completed, the Mumbai Coastal Road North project is expected to bring significant relief to commuters in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The project will not only reduce travel time but also provide a smooth and uninterrupted journey from South Mumbai to Bhayandar.
