Bihar Places 6 Districts On High Alert Amid Nepal Flash Flood

A flash flood in Nepal has triggered a high alert in Bihar, with Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary directing officials to remain vigilant in vulnerable districts linked to the Gandak river basin.

The alert comes after a glacial lake outburst occurred in the Tibet region, causing a surge in the Bhote-Koshi river, which originates in Tibet and joins the Trishuli river in Nepal.

As a result, an unexpected rise in the discharge and water level of the Gandak river downstream is likely, posing a threat to the districts of West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, Muzaffarpur, and Vaishali.

Choudhary chaired a high-level review meeting on Wednesday to assess the situation and directed officials to maintain heightened vigilance in the districts concerned.

He also directed officials to continuously monitor the flow of flood water entering Bihar from Nepal and maintain special vigilance in vulnerable and potentially affected areas.

NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed in vulnerable districts like West Champaran and Muzaffarpur to handle any emergency.

The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring the structural strength of embankments and taking immediate corrective measures wherever any weak spots are detected.

Special night patrolling of dams and embankments was also ordered to ensure the safety of all dams and embankments.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah reportedly spoke with the CM about the situation in the state and assured the state government of all necessary help in dealing with any situation.

The situation is being closely monitored, and the state government is taking all necessary precautions to prevent any damage.

The flash flood in Nepal has already caused significant damage, with reports of 157 deaths and hundreds missing, including 133 Indian Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims.

The Bihar government is taking proactive measures to prevent any similar disaster in the state.
