Amit Shah Launches 'Gramin Gyan Setu' With 2.8 Lakh Books

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has launched the 'Gramin Gyan Setu' project, a digital library network that connects 63 rural libraries in Gandhinagar, Kalol, and Sanand with four central libraries holding a combined 2.8 lakh books. The initiative was launched in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency on Wednesday.

The project aims to take reading and knowledge resources to villages, with small libraries in villages being stocked with around 4,500 to 6,000 books each. The collections include children's stories, books on the history of Gujarat and India, and material for competitive examinations.

Four mobile library vans, funded through the Member of Parliament grant, will visit villages every 15 days to collect old books and facilitate home delivery of new books ordered through the digital application. This will allow rural readers to access a wider range of titles without having to travel to central libraries.

According to Union Minister Shah, the books placed in village libraries have been selected to develop reading habits among children and young people. He thanked the Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and the Gujarat government for their cooperation in developing the system.

The 'Gramin Gyan Setu' project is part of a larger effort to promote reading culture in rural areas. Union Minister Shah emphasized the importance of creating a reading-friendly environment in schools and villages, supported by appropriate reading habits and guidance from librarians.

The project has already connected around 752 libraries with the digital application within three months. Work is also underway to digitally connect literature from institutions, including Sastu Sahitya Mandal, Gita Press, the Bhupen Hazarika Institute, and Thiruvalluvar Sansthan.

Union Minister Shah appealed to parents and homemakers to develop reading habits themselves and encourage children to read books. He recalled his own childhood, noting that the reading habit he developed at a young age later helped him pursue his studies and contribute to public service.
