Mumbai Launches AI Safety Kit For Children Aged 3-8

A new AI safety and awareness kit has been launched in Mumbai, urging parents to teach children how to interact with artificial intelligence technology from as early as three years of age.

The 'AI Safety Awareness Kit for Parents' is designed for children aged three to eight and focuses on computational thinking, digital safety, and human-child interaction through play, rhymes, stories, and family activities.

The kit, created by Dr Swati Popat Vats, president of the Early Childhood Association (ECA), takes a 'human first' approach, teaching young children that AI and machines can assist them but should not replace human judgement, relationships, or decision-making.

Children are increasingly encountering AI-enabled systems, such as smart speakers and conversational AI, before they understand what artificial intelligence is. The kit argues that AI literacy should begin early to prevent children from attributing human-like qualities to AI systems.

The material encourages adults to change the language they use around technology, describing devices as 'programmed' to respond rather than saying they 'know' an answer.

A proposed 'AI Awareness Charter for Young Children' says children should understand the technologies they encounter, be protected from inappropriate uses of AI, learn to question information, and understand that AI is created by people and should remain under human guidance.

The kit uses games, songs, and family activities to teach AI safety, rather than conventional classroom lectures. Exercises such as 'AI Detective' and 'Secret Keeper' encourage children to question and verify information and not disclose personal information to AI or apps.

Other activities introduce concepts such as algorithms, sequencing, debugging, and distinguishing between living things and machines. The material also emphasizes the importance of screen habits, encouraging children to take breaks from screens and not replacing movement, outdoor play, meals, or human relationships with technology.

This initiative is significant for Mumbai parents, as it highlights the need for responsible technology use and AI literacy from a young age. By teaching children to interact with AI in a safe and critical manner, parents can help them navigate the increasingly digital world.
