BMC Seeks Coastal Committee To Tackle Marine Pollution

Mumbai's coastline is facing a severe crisis due to the increasing amount of waste, untreated sewage, plastic pollution, and encroachments, which is threatening the marine biodiversity and the livelihoods of the traditional Koli community.

His party colleague Chintamani Nivate highlighted the issue of waste being dumped at Khar Danda, which was initially cleared from Juhu beach, and demanded its immediate clean-up.

Former Mayor and Shiv Sena (UBT) corporator Vishakha Raut pointed out the flow of waste from the Mithi River into Dadar Chowpatty and demanded the installation of a trash boom to intercept floating garbage before it reaches the sea.

The corporators also emphasized the need for regular cleaning of Madh, Aksa, and other beaches, highlighting the impact of marine waste on fishermen. They stated that garbage is increasingly being found mixed with fish in their catches, affecting both their livelihoods and the marine ecosystem.
