MP MGNREGA Hits ₹1,661 Crore Fund Crunch

A severe fund crunch has hit the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in Madhya Pradesh, leaving districts struggling to clear wage payments. As of June 1, 2026, pending wage payments under MGNREGA had reached ₹1,661.04 crore, according to official documents submitted by the Panchayat and Rural Development Department.

The state government has repeatedly approached the Union Ministry of Rural Development seeking additional funds to clear outstanding liabilities and continue implementation of the scheme. District-wise pending payments as of June 1 show that Vidisha has the highest pending amount of ₹6,440.39, followed by Morena with ₹2,176.07, and Khandwa with ₹1,135.35. Other districts, including Agar Malwa, Alirajpur, Bhind, Bhopal, Gwalior, Indore, Jabalpur, Mandsaur, Narsinghpur, Neemuch, Niwari, Raisen, Ratlam, Sagar, Sehore, Shajapur, Singrauli, and Ujjain, also have significant pending payments.

MGNREGA payments cover not only labourers' wages but also construction materials and administrative expenses. However, the Centre has reduced assistance for material works and administration, making it difficult to pay suppliers and execute projects. Officials said wages are required to be paid within 15 days, but did not specify when the pending dues would be cleared.
