Mumbai Christians Organise Marriage Registration Camps

Mumbai Christian couples are facing difficulties in getting their church marriages officially registered due to the absence of a government registrar in the city.

The government registrar's post has remained vacant for some time, forcing couples to travel to Pune to complete the registration process.

To address this issue, community organisations such as the Bombay Catholic Sabha (BCS) and the Christian Development Association have stepped in to organise special marriage registration camps in Mumbai.

One such camp will be organised on August 8 by the Our Lady of Victories Unit of the BCS in Mahim, where a registrar from Pune will attend to process applications.

The need for such camps has arisen as church-issued marriage certificates are no longer accepted by several government agencies, including those processing passport applications.

Bento Lobo of the BCS explained that church certificates do not carry a government seal, making them unacceptable to many authorities.

To obtain a government-recognised marriage certificate, couples must first get their church marriage certificates authenticated by the Archbishop of Bombay.

They must also submit supporting documents, including wedding photographs and government-issued identity proofs.

The community organisations advise people to keep all their documents in order, especially in view of discussions around measures such as the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Having properly registered marriage documents is important, and the camps have assumed greater significance in this context.

The registration camps aim to spare couples the inconvenience of travelling to Pune and facilitate the process of obtaining government-recognised marriage certificates.

This initiative by community organisations is a welcome step, and it remains to be seen how the government will address the issue of the vacant registrar's post in Mumbai.

For now, the registration camps provide a solution for Christian couples in Mumbai who are struggling to get their marriages officially registered.
