Villagers Protest in MP's Khargone Over Muddy Road

A funeral procession in Bhikangaon, Madhya Pradesh, was forced to stop outside the Gram Panchayat building due to a muddy approach road to the crematorium. The road had become impassable during the monsoon season, prompting family members of 70-year-old Babulal Bhairam to prepare a pyre outside the Panchayat building in protest.

The villagers claimed that they are often forced to cross a drain to reach the crematorium during the monsoon and that when water levels rise, bodies have to be taken to neighbouring Lalkheda village for cremation.

Tehsildar Manoj Chauhan, district panchayat chief executive officer Nilesh Solanki, and the police station in-charge reached the village to address the protest. The officials walked nearly a kilometre through the muddy stretch to inspect the route, as vehicles were unable to proceed.

Following assurances from officials that a permanent solution would be explored, the villagers ended the protest and the funeral procession proceeded to the cremation ground, where the last rites were performed. The officials assured the villagers that a detailed inquiry would be conducted to find a permanent solution to the problem.

Villagers Gulabchand Gujar, Hiralal Kadwa, and Badri Gujar said that despite repeated demands, no all-weather road has been constructed. They expressed their frustration over the lack of action by the authorities to address the issue.

Tehsildar Manoj Chauhan said that an earlier case related to the road had been dismissed and relevant documents had been sought. He assured the villagers that a permanent solution would be implemented after a detailed inquiry.
