Hyderabad Woman Alleges Abuse in Oman

A disturbing case of alleged abuse and exploitation has come to light involving a 26-year-old woman from Hyderabad who travelled to Oman for a housemaid job. The woman, Shabnam Begum, claims she was subjected to physical abuse, forced to work long hours, and denied wages after being lured to Muscat by a local recruitment agent with false promises.

According to Begum, she was promised a monthly salary of 200 Omani Riyals, approximately Rs 50,000, and was assured employment as a domestic worker. However, upon arrival in Muscat on March 26, she alleges she was made to work for 12 to 15 hours a day in multiple houses without receiving any salary for over three months.

Begum's ordeal is documented in a self-recorded video sent to Majlis Bachao Tehreek leader Amjed Ullah Khan, in which she claims she was denied access to a mobile phone for nearly one-and-a-half months and was subjected to physical abuse. She also alleges she was not provided adequate food and accommodation during her stay.

The woman's plight came to light after she escaped from her employer's residence and reached the Indian Embassy in Muscat, seeking help and intervention for her safe return. However, she claims her passport had been taken away by the recruitment agents, preventing her from returning to India.

Amjed Ullah Khan has shared Begum's appeal on social media, urging External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to direct the Indian Embassy in Muscat to ensure her safety and facilitate her repatriation to Hyderabad. He has also demanded strict action against the recruitment agent for allegedly sending her abroad under false assurances.

The Indian Embassy in Muscat has responded to the appeal, stating that it has taken cognisance of the matter and that the case is being pursued at the appropriate levels.

This incident highlights the vulnerabilities of Indian workers, particularly women, who are lured to foreign countries with promises of employment and better living conditions. It also underscores the need for stricter regulations and oversight of recruitment agents to prevent such cases of exploitation.

The Indian government has been working to strengthen its efforts to protect the rights of Indian workers abroad, including the establishment of a dedicated portal for registering complaints and seeking assistance. However, more needs to be done to prevent such cases of abuse and exploitation.

As the case of Shabnam Begum continues to unfold, it is essential that the Indian authorities take swift and decisive action to ensure her safe return and bring those responsible for her exploitation to justice. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting the rights and dignity of Indian workers abroad and the need for continued vigilance and action to prevent such cases of abuse and exploitation.

The incident has sparked concerns about the safety and well-being of Indian workers in foreign countries, particularly in the Middle East, where many Indians travel for employment. It is crucial that the Indian government and authorities take proactive steps to prevent such cases and ensure that Indian workers are protected and supported abroad.

In conclusion, the case of Shabnam Begum is a disturbing reminder of the risks and vulnerabilities faced by Indian workers abroad. It is essential that the Indian authorities take swift and decisive action to ensure her safe return and bring those responsible for her exploitation to justice. The incident highlights the need for stricter regulations and oversight of recruitment agents and the importance of protecting the rights and dignity of Indian workers abroad.
