Uttarakhand Media Delegation Visits SECL's Gevra Mine

On the second day of a five-day Study and Media Exposure Tour, a 13-member media delegation from Uttarakhand visited South Eastern Coalfields Limited's Gevra Opencast Coal Mine. The delegation observed mining activities and was briefed on the process of coal extraction, removal of overburden, coal handling, and transportation.

The journalists were also apprised of the use of modern machinery and digital technology for monitoring and operations. Regional General Manager, SECL, Sanjay Mishra emphasized the importance of coal in meeting the country's development and energy requirements. He highlighted the company's focus on workers' safety, social responsibility, and environmental protection.

General Manager (Operations) Dheeraj Chaudhary briefed the journalists about the operations, production capacity, and safety protocols of the Gevra mine. He stated that Gevra is the world's second-largest and Asia's number one opencast coal mine, producing around 59.1 million tonnes of coal in 2023-24. The mine supplies coal to seven states and contributes around six per cent of India's total coal production.

The media delegation was also briefed about various environmental protection measures being undertaken in the mining areas, including afforestation, Miyawaki plantation, dust control, mine water management, and land reclamation. Under the Miyawaki technique, around 20,000 saplings have been planted across nearly two hectares, with a reported survival rate of around 70 per cent.

Tour Nodal Officer and Assistant Director, PIB Dehradun, Sanjeev Sundriyal stated that studying the model of development, energy, safety, and environmental management in Chhattisgarh would be beneficial for Uttarakhand. The media delegation will visit NTPC and BALCO in Korba to learn about energy generation.

The visit provided the media delegation with a comprehensive understanding of the coal production process and the measures being taken to ensure safety and environmental protection.
