India's Space Economy Reaches $9 Billion

India's space economy has reached $9 billion and is projected to reach $40–45 billion over the next decade, driven by a robust startup ecosystem and policy reforms.

The country's space ecosystem has expanded rapidly, with registered space startups rising from 1 in 2014 to around 440 in 2026. Private investment in India's space sector surged nearly six-fold, climbing from $100.5 million in 2021–22 to $618.5 million by March 31, 2026.

By mid-2026, 113 authorisations had been granted to 52 Non-Government Entities (NGEs), out of which 18 are startups for satellite operations, payload establishment and launch services. India has also launched 399 foreign satellites and has over 300 global space partnerships.

The Indian Space Policy 2023 further expanded private participation across the space value chain. NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of ISRO, provides launch, satellite and space-based services and transfers ISRO technologies to Indian industry. Its revenue rose from Rs 321.77 crore in FY 2021–22 to over Rs 3,000 crore in FY 2024–25.

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) enables private space activities through a single-window mechanism. It facilitated 71 ISRO’s technology transfers to industry and start-ups as on January 31, 2026. Foreign direct investment (FDI) rules in February 2024 were liberalised for the space sector.

The IN-SPACe Seed Fund Scheme supports early-stage space start-ups, the Rs 1,000 crore Venture Capital Fund provides growth capital, and the Rs 500 crore Technology Adoption Fund enables wider deployment of space technologies.

The growth of India's space economy is expected to continue, driven by the government's policy reforms and the increasing participation of private players. The country's space sector is expected to play a significant role in the global space industry in the coming years.

The Indian space programme has come a long way, with the development of homegrown launch vehicles and the launch of several satellites. The government's efforts to promote private participation in the space sector have yielded positive results, with many startups and private companies entering the sector.

In the next decade, India's space economy is expected to reach $45 billion, driven by the growing demand for space-based services and the increasing participation of private players. The government's policy reforms and the investment in the space sector are expected to continue, driving the growth of the industry.

The growth of India's space economy is significant for the country, as it is expected to create new opportunities for employment and economic growth. The space sector is also expected to play a significant role in the development of several industries, including telecommunications, navigation, and weather forecasting.

In conclusion, India's space economy has reached $9 billion and is expected to reach $45 billion in the next decade. The government's policy reforms and the increasing participation of private players are driving the growth of the industry. The space sector is expected to play a significant role in the global space industry and create new opportunities for employment and economic growth in India.
