Mumbai Sees 612% Rise in H1N1 Cases, 20.1% in Malaria

Mumbai has recorded a significant rise in H1N1 and malaria cases during the monsoon season, according to data from the BMC Public Health Department. Between June and August, the city reported 4,485 malaria cases, a 20.1% increase from the same period last year. The number of H1N1 cases jumped from 62 to 441, marking a 612% rise.

The BMC has stated that suspected H1N1 patients are being screened and treated with oseltamivir as needed. Close contacts of infected patients are being monitored for 10 days, and door-to-door surveys are being conducted in affected areas. The civic body has also ensured that BMC hospitals have adequate facilities, including reserved beds, ventilators, PPE kits, and medicines, to manage patients requiring hospitalization.

Despite the rise in malaria and H1N1 cases, several other monsoon-related illnesses have declined. Dengue cases fell by 20.7% from 1,972 to 1,563, while chikungunya cases dropped by 87.6% from 370 to 46. Leptospirosis cases declined by 37.2% from 406 to 255, and gastroenteritis cases fell by 11.1% from 2,197 to 1,954. COVID-19 cases also decreased by 77.4% from 668 to 151.

As part of its vector-control drive, the BMC inspected over 12.5 lakh potential mosquito breeding sites for dengue and removed 1,807 tyres and 59,841 scrap items from rooftops and premises. For malaria control, 52,197 potential breeding sites were inspected, with Anopheles mosquito breeding detected at 8,055 locations.

Malaria cases have increased in several wards, including E Ward, K-West Ward, G-South Ward, F-South Ward, and H-West Ward. Leptospirosis cases are being reported more frequently in F-North Ward, M-East Ward, T Ward, K-East Ward, and G-North Ward. Gastroenteritis cases have also increased in L Ward, H-West Ward, K-West Ward, N Ward, and H-East Ward.

The BMC's efforts to intensify disease surveillance and control measures are crucial in mitigating the spread of these diseases. The civic body's actions, including door-to-door surveys and vector control, aim to reduce the number of cases and prevent further outbreaks.
