India Joins 25 Nations In Global 6G Initiative

India has joined the United States and 24 other nations in a global initiative to guide the development and deployment of next-generation 6G telecommunications networks. The agreement was finalised following a bilateral meeting between US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada on the sidelines of the G20 Innovation Ministerial.

The meeting between Secretary Lutnick and Minister Prasada discussed the future of 6G and the importance of ensuring that next-generation networks reflect shared security interests, strengthen competitiveness, and drive innovation. The US Department of Commerce announced the agreement on Monday, stating that India's participation is a significant step towards shaping the future of 6G.

Minister Prasada led the Indian delegation at the G20 Innovation Ministers’ meeting held on September 1 and 2 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States. The meeting was hosted by the US Department of Commerce and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The Indian delegation included senior officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Department of Science and Technology, and Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.

The G20 Ministers released the Innovation Ministerial Statement, recognising the potential of emerging technologies to unlock prosperity, enhance productivity, and expand opportunity for all peoples. On the sidelines of the G20 Ministerial, Minister Prasada held several bilateral discussions, including a meeting with Secretary Lutnick to discuss strengthening cooperation across semiconductors, AI, and data centres.

During the meeting, Minister Prasada encouraged the possibility of more US investments in ISM2.0 and proposed strengthening AI technology partnership. He also shared a mechanism for safeguards for AI. The discussion centred on advancing critical sectors that form the foundation of the modern technological landscape, including semiconductors, AI, and data centres.
