The story
Stree 2: Sarkate Ka Aatank picks up in the sleepy town of Chanderi, where the protective female spirit of the first film has settled into local folklore. Peace does not last long. A new terror arrives in the form of Sarkata, a headless supernatural entity who abducts the town's most outspoken and independent-minded women, dragging them into the dark. The villain draws on the Bengali legend of the Skondhokata, a headless ghost said to be born of those decapitated in fatal accidents, forever searching for a head to call its own.
It falls to the same ragtag band of friends to fight back: the tailor Vicky (Rajkummar Rao), the bookish Rudra (Pankaj Tripathi), the perpetually panicked Jana (Abhishek Banerjee) and Bittu (Aparshakti Khurana), aided once more by the mysterious woman played by Shraddha Kapoor. Like its predecessor, the film wears its social allegory lightly but unmistakably: a monster who specifically hunts women who dare to speak up is not a subtle metaphor, and the script by Niren Bhatt keeps the laughs and the message running side by side.
The tone is pure Chanderi: broad slapstick, spooky set-pieces and small-town affection stitched together so the scares and the jokes never cancel each other out. Director Amar Kaushik, who also helmed the 2018 original, treats the horror as a delivery system for comedy and a sly commentary on patriarchy rather than a bid to genuinely terrify.
A shared universe comes of age
Stree 2 is the fourth chapter in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (also called the Maddock Supernatural Universe), produced by Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films with Jio Studios. The franchise began with Stree (2018) and grew through Bhediya (2022) and Munjya (2024) before Stree 2 tied the strands together and turned a run of quirky genre films into a genuine cinematic universe in the Bollywood mainstream.
The film leans hard into that connective tissue. Abhishek Banerjee's Jana functions as the thread running through every instalment, and the movie's celebrated post-credits sequences pull in Varun Dhawan reprising his werewolf from Bhediya and Akshay Kumar in a mysterious, powers-granting cameo that fans quickly nicknamed the universe's Thanos. A teased blood-drinking menace in Delhi pointed straight toward the next film, Thamma (2025), rewarding attentive viewers and stoking anticipation for what comes next.
Performances
The ensemble is the film's engine. Rajkummar Rao anchors it as the sweet, cowardly-then-brave Vicky, while Pankaj Tripathi walks off with scene after scene as the deadpan librarian Rudra, delivering exposition and one-liners with equal relish. Abhishek Banerjee's Jana provides much of the nervous energy, and Aparshakti Khurana rounds out the group.
Shraddha Kapoor returns as the enigmatic woman at the centre of the mystery, her role deliberately kept ambiguous to preserve the franchise's central twist. Tamannaah Bhatia makes a high-wattage special appearance in the song 'Aaj Ki Raat,' a set-piece that became one of the film's biggest talking points. The chemistry among the leads, honed over the first film, is a large part of why audiences returned in such numbers.
Music
The soundtrack, composed largely by Sachin-Jigar, became a phenomenon in its own right. Its centrepiece, 'Aaj Ki Raat' — written by Amitabh Bhattacharya, sung by Madhubanti Bagchi and Divya Kumar, and picturised on Tamannaah Bhatia — was one of the biggest Hindi songs of 2024, topping Billboard India's chart and even registering on the Billboard Global 200.
The song's success carried into awards season: Madhubanti Bagchi won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for 'Aaj Ki Raat,' one of the film's marquee wins in a year when Stree 2 collected 14 Filmfare nominations. Beyond the hit single, the album's mix of dance numbers and hummable tracks kept the film in cultural conversation long after release.
Box office and legacy
Released on 15 August 2024 to coincide with Independence Day, Stree 2 turned into a box-office juggernaut. It grossed more than ₹875 crore worldwide, finishing as the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2024 and one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of all time, as well as among the top Indian films of the year across all languages.
Its scale reset expectations for what a horror-comedy — a genre long treated as second-tier in Bollywood — could achieve commercially. By fusing genuine mass-audience appeal with a pointed feminist streak and a Marvel-style universe payoff, Stree 2 became, as our editors put it, the crown jewel of the Maddock horror-comedy universe: proof that smart, homegrown genre filmmaking could out-earn far bigger-budgeted spectacles and leave audiences waiting eagerly for the next chapter.
