A new Prem takes the stage

Announced in April 2026, "Yeh Prem Mol Liya" is an upcoming Hindi family romance directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya and slated for a theatrical release on 27 November 2026. As of this writing the film is not yet out, and its story is being kept firmly under wraps in the classic Rajshri manner. What the makers have made clear is the character at its heart: Ayushmann Khurrana steps into the role of Prem, the gentle, idealistic hero who has been a signature of Barjatya's cinema for decades.

The name is not incidental. "Prem" has recurred across Rajshri Productions like a family heirloom, most famously worn by Salman Khan in "Maine Pyar Kiya" (1989), "Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!" (1994), "Hum Saath-Saath Hain" (1999) and "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo" (2015). By titling the film "Yeh Prem Mol Liya" and casting a new leading man as Prem, Barjatya is signalling a deliberate return to that world of warmth, music and multi-generational households, brought back to the big screen roughly a decade after Prem last appeared there.

The Barjatya touch

Sooraj Barjatya belongs to the third generation of the Rajshri filmmaking family, and his name is shorthand for a particular kind of Hindi cinema: sentimental, song-filled, and centred on the joint family and the values that hold it together. "Yeh Prem Mol Liya" marks his directorial return after "Uunchai" (2022), the mountaineering drama for which he won the Best Direction prize at the 70th National Film Awards.

The film is produced by Rajshri Productions in association with Mahaveer Jain Films, pairing the studio's heritage with a contemporary production partner. For Barjatya, the project is both a continuation and a refresh, applying his familiar template of family and romance to a new star and a new decade of audiences.

The cast and the music

The film pairs Ayushmann Khurrana and Sharvari on screen for the first time, and it is notably Khurrana's first collaboration with Rajshri Productions. Known for socially themed, character-led films, Khurrana here embraces a more classically romantic register, described by the makers as embodying Prem's gentle simplicity and innocent mischief. Opposite him, Sharvari steps into the mould of the Rajshri heroine. Press reports have also named a supporting ensemble that includes veterans such as Anupam Kher, Supriya Pathak, Seema Pahwa and Shaad Randhawa, though the makers have not issued a full official cast list.

On the music, Barjatya reunites with composer Himesh Reshammiya, their first collaboration since "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo" in 2015, a gap of roughly eleven years. Music has always been load-bearing in a Barjatya film, and the reunion has been one of the most talked-about elements of the announcement, given how central the songs of earlier Prem films remain to their popularity.

Why it matters

For Rajshri watchers, "Yeh Prem Mol Liya" carries the weight of a franchise revival. The Prem films are woven into the fabric of Indian wedding-season viewing, and the prospect of a fresh entry, complete with a new Prem and a Barjatya-Reshammiya score, has generated considerable anticipation ahead of its release.

Because the film is still upcoming, there is as yet no plot detail to summarise, no reviews to weigh and no box-office record to report. What can be said is that it represents a meeting of two lineages: the old-school, big-hearted family entertainer that Rajshri built its name on, and a leading man in Ayushmann Khurrana who arrives from a very different, more issue-driven strand of Hindi cinema. Whether that combination reintroduces the Prem archetype to a new generation is the question the 27 November 2026 release is set up to answer.
