Two flanks, one impossible question

Luis de la Fuente’s plan asked Argentina a question they could not answer twice. Nahuel Molina had to worry about Yamal’s left foot; Nicolás Tagliafico had to respect Nico Williams’ burst. Track one and the other bit. The teenager on the right hugged the line before cutting inside; his running mate on the left went in behind, dragging defenders wide and hollowing out the middle. Argentina’s full-backs spent the night retreating, and the deeper they sat, the more room Spain’s midfield found to breathe.

The width that made the winner

You do not keep seven clean sheets in eight matches by accident, and you do not win a final without a spark. Spain’s wide men were that spark. Every dart from Nico Williams and every feint from Yamal stretched the pitch a few metres more, and it was into that stretched, tiring shape that Torres arrived off the bench to strike the only goal. Rodri, the Golden Ball winner, kept feeding the flanks; Pau Cubarsí, named best young player, held the fort behind. Unbeaten, one goal conceded all tournament — the wings were the tip of a ruthless whole.

A torch, and a flank, passed on

At full time Yamal, 19, embraced a tearful Messi before finding Torres — youth saluting the master it had just eclipsed. For India’s millions, from Mumbai to Pune, this was the future of the game announcing itself down both touchlines.
