Boy Regains Mobility With Robotic Limbs After Electric Shock

A six-year-old boy from Burhanpur district in Madhya Pradesh has regained mobility and independence after a devastating high-voltage electric shock left him with life-threatening injuries. Manthan Adolkar was playing on a rooftop in December last year when he came into contact with a high-tension power line, suffering severe electrical burns.

The injuries were so extensive that both arms had to be amputated from the shoulder and his left leg from the hip to save his life. After initial treatment locally, he was referred to Shri Aurobindo Hospital in critical condition. A multidisciplinary team of doctors at the hospital worked together to restore the child's functional abilities.

Paediatric surgeon Dr Advait Prakash said the child was treated using advanced technology and modern medical equipment. The hospital's founder chairman, Dr Vinod Bhandari, took up the case as a challenge and arranged for imported robotic prosthetic limbs to be brought in. Despite delays caused by international logistics issues, the hospital ensured the devices reached India.

The team of doctors, including plastic surgeons, orthopaedic specialists, paediatricians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and anaesthesiologists, worked together to help Manthan regain mobility. After eight months of treatment and rehabilitation, Manthan can now walk and perform daily activities with the help of his robotic prosthetic limbs.

The hospital also bore the treatment costs after the family's Ayushman Bharat insurance cover was exhausted. Doctors said Manthan has regained movement in his artificial elbow, wrist, and fingers, marking a major milestone in his recovery. The successful treatment is a testament to the hospital's commitment to providing advanced medical care and rehabilitation.

Manthan's case highlights the importance of access to quality medical care, especially for those in critical condition. The use of advanced technology, such as robotic prosthetic limbs, has greatly improved Manthan's quality of life. The hospital's efforts to ensure the devices reached India despite logistical challenges demonstrate their dedication to providing the best possible care.

The treatment and rehabilitation process was long and challenging, but the outcome is a significant achievement for the medical team. Manthan's recovery is an inspiration to others who may be facing similar challenges. The hospital's commitment to providing affordable medical care is also commendable, as they bore the treatment costs after the family's insurance cover was exhausted.

In conclusion, Manthan's story is a remarkable example of the power of medical care and rehabilitation. With the help of robotic prosthetic limbs, he has regained mobility and independence, and his quality of life has greatly improved. The successful treatment is a testament to the hospital's expertise and commitment to providing advanced medical care.

The significance of this story extends beyond Manthan's individual case, as it highlights the importance of access to quality medical care and rehabilitation. It also demonstrates the potential of advanced technology, such as robotic prosthetic limbs, to improve the lives of those with disabilities. As medical technology continues to evolve, it is likely that we will see more cases like Manthan's, where individuals are able to regain mobility and independence with the help of advanced prosthetic limbs.
