WhatsApp Introduces Bill Payments In India

WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform, has rolled out a new feature in India that allows users to pay their bills directly within the app. This feature, which is being introduced gradually, will be available to all Android and iOS users in the coming weeks.

The bill payments feature is powered by the Bharat BillPay System (BBPS) network, which provides access to approximately 22,722 billers across 30 categories. These categories include electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card, and loan repayments.

To access the bill payments feature, users can tap the rupee icon at the top of the WhatsApp home screen. From there, they can view past and upcoming payments, manage multiple accounts under a single provider, and pay using UPI as well as credit and debit cards.

According to Arun Srinivas, managing director and country head of Meta India, the goal of this feature is to bring simplicity to one of the most routine tasks in every household. Srinivas stated that the company wants to make bill payments on WhatsApp as easy as sending a message.

The launch of this feature comes after Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that CRED founder Kunal Shah would be joining Meta as WhatsApp's next global CEO. Additionally, Meta is investing around $900 million in the fintech company.

WhatsApp Pay has seen significant growth, processing 150 million transactions in June 2026, which is more than four times the 37 million transactions processed in June 2024. The share of UPI transaction volumes has also risen to around 0.7 percent in June 2026 from 0.27 percent two years earlier.
