Karnataka Govt Officer Found With Woman During Hospital Inspection

An undertrial Karnataka government officer, Mahamad Hussain, was found staying with a woman in a special ward at Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital during a surprise inspection by the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority on Monday evening.

Hussain, who is the Assistant Director of Land Records survey supervisor, had been admitted to the hospital since August 21 for treatment related to back pain. However, officials claimed that his medical condition did not appear to warrant such treatment and there was no court permission for his hospital admission.

The inspection team found Hussain staying with a woman in the same hospital room, raising questions about the circumstances of his admission and the lack of supervision. Hussain was arrested by the Lokayukta in July in connection with alleged irregularities at the Srirangapatna Taluk Land Records office and was remanded to judicial custody on July 3.

According to Karnataka DGP (Prisons) Alok Kumar, Hussain had been referred to the hospital by a prison doctor and was admitted following an orthopaedic doctor's recommendation. However, Kumar said that the responsibility for escorting the prisoner rested with the district police and action was being taken against members of the escort team over alleged lapses.

The Mandya District Prison Superintendent had delayed informing the concerned court about Hussain's hospital admission, prompting an inquiry into the procedural lapse. The officer has since been sent back to judicial custody.

The Lokayukta had accused Hussain of illegally entering the land records office and allegedly assisting in land demarcation, digitisation of records and creation of fake documents using government software. The incident has raised concerns about the supervision and monitoring of undertrial prisoners and the potential for abuse of power.

The Karnataka State Legal Services Authority has sought a detailed report on the incident, and an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding Hussain's hospital admission and the presence of the woman in his hospital room.
