Kalyan Hill Collapse Leaves Family Homeless

A devastating hill slope collapse occurred in Kalyan East's Netivali area on Thursday, leaving a family homeless. The incident happened after days of relentless monsoon rain, which caused a portion of the rain-soaked hill to give way, sending tonnes of mud and rocks crashing onto a house near an Urdu school.

The house belonged to Nadeem Shaikh, whose family managed to evacuate moments before the structure was crushed. The occupants noticed signs of danger and moved to safety, averting a major tragedy. The collapse caused extensive damage and also spilled mud, stones, and boulders onto the adjoining road, temporarily disrupting vehicular movement.

Local residents alerted the authorities, and emergency teams rushed to the spot. Civic workers launched an immediate clearance operation to remove the debris and restore normal traffic. Assistant Municipal Commissioner Savita Hile visited the site and reviewed the situation, stating that the continuous rainfall had saturated the hill's soil, causing the slope to collapse.

The affected family will receive all possible assistance from the government, according to Hile. Local corporators Snehal Sanjay More and Rekha Rajan Chaudhary also inspected the affected area and urged the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) to provide immediate relief and temporary rehabilitation to the displaced family.

Residents of Netivali alleged that the hill has remained a serious safety hazard for years, with rockfalls and minor landslides occurring almost every monsoon. Despite repeated complaints, no permanent preventive measures have been undertaken. Thousands of families living around the hill continue to spend every rainy season in fear, with concerns growing each year over the possibility of a larger disaster.

The incident highlights the risks faced by vulnerable hill settlements, particularly during heavy rainfall. Residents demanded that the civic administration, district authorities, and the state government jointly conduct a scientific assessment of the hill and implement long-term safety measures before another collapse results in casualties.

The KDMC has been criticized for its lack of action in addressing the recurring landslide threat. Citizens questioned why authorities had failed to carry out slope stabilisation, protective retaining walls, or other mitigation measures despite the recurring threat. The incident has once again brought the issue of vulnerable hill settlements into focus, with residents calling for urgent action to prevent another disaster.

In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, heavy rainfall continues to pose a significant threat to hill settlements. The incident in Kalyan serves as a reminder of the need for proactive measures to ensure public safety. The government and civic authorities must work together to identify and address potential hazards, providing relief and rehabilitation to affected families and implementing long-term solutions to prevent such incidents in the future.

The collapse of the hill slope in Kalyan has significant implications for the region, highlighting the need for improved infrastructure and safety measures. As the monsoon season continues, it is essential for authorities to take proactive steps to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of residents living in vulnerable areas.
