India's Trade Deficit Narrows To $26.86 Billion In August

India's merchandise trade deficit narrowed to $26.86 billion in August, compared to $27.22 billion in the same month last year and $31.98 billion in July. This improvement was driven by a substantial increase in merchandise exports, which grew 26% year-on-year to $43.81 billion.

In contrast, imports rose 14% year-on-year to $70.67 billion. Between April and August, India's merchandise exports totalled $215.91 billion, registering growth of nearly 18% from the corresponding period a year earlier.

The growth in exports has been a significant factor in narrowing the trade deficit. The acceleration in merchandise exports has also lifted their share of India's gross domestic product (GDP), reversing a decline seen over the previous three financial years.

The latest available data showed that merchandise exports accounted for 14% of GDP in the first quarter of FY27. This represents a recovery to the level last seen in FY23, which marked a record high for India's annual merchandise exports.

In the first five months of the financial year, merchandise imports expanded by around 18% to $363 billion. Consequently, the merchandise trade deficit for the April-August period stood at approximately $147 billion.

The increase in exports is a positive sign for the Indian economy, which has been impacted by softer global demand and higher US tariffs on Indian products in recent years.

The growth in exports has been driven by various factors, including government initiatives to promote exports and an increase in demand from key markets.

The narrowing of the trade deficit is expected to have a positive impact on the Indian economy, as it will help to reduce the country's reliance on imports and promote economic growth.

In conclusion, the narrowing of India's trade deficit to $26.86 billion in August is a significant development, driven by a substantial increase in merchandise exports. This growth in exports is expected to have a positive impact on the Indian economy, promoting economic growth and reducing the country's reliance on imports.
