10 Pregnant Women in MP Jails

In Madhya Pradesh, 10 pregnant women are currently incarcerated in various jails across the state. Despite guidelines allowing for temporary release or parole for pregnant women, most of them are unable to access these provisions due to lack of awareness and financial resources.

The 10 pregnant women inmates are distributed across different jails in the state, with two being convicts and eight undertrial prisoners. The convicts are lodged in Bhopal and Sagar Central Jail, while the undertrial prisoners are in District Jail, Indore, Central Jail, Gwalior, Central Jail, Jabalpur, District Jail, Vidisha, and Central Jail, Ujjain.

According to Varun Kapoor, DG, prisons and correctional services, the jail administration ensures that all necessary medical and other facilities are provided to pregnant jail inmates. These facilities include a special diet, regular check-ups by a gynaecologist, and provision of iron and folic acid tablets and other supplements.

The jail department also ensures that the pregnant women inmates receive regular vaccinations and are admitted to a local government hospital when their delivery time nears. The state government's Janani Suraksha Yojana also provides them with financial assistance.

To minimize the stigma associated with birth in prison, the address of the mother in hospital records does not mention the jail. Instead, only the name of the locality and the city where the jail is located is mentioned as the address.

The provisions for pregnant jail inmates include ensuring that the jail has facilities for child delivery before sending a pregnant woman there. Arrangements for temporary release or parole should also be made to enable an expectant prisoner to have her delivery outside the prison.

In a recent case, a court in Nashik granted bail to a pregnant woman, Nida Khan, observing that the trauma of giving birth in prison is unbearable for any woman.

The situation of pregnant women in MP jails highlights the need for greater awareness and access to provisions that can support them during this critical period.

The guidelines and facilities provided by the jail administration are a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done to ensure that pregnant women inmates are able to access the support and care they need.
