India Has 86,360 PG Medical Seats, Karnataka Leads

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has announced that India currently has 86,360 postgraduate medical seats, with Karnataka leading the way with 10,092 seats. This information was shared by Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda in response to a question in the Lok Sabha.

The data, which includes seats approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), shows that Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu follow Karnataka in terms of the number of postgraduate medical seats.

Karnataka has the largest number of postgraduate medical seats, with 10,092 seats available, including 2,805 government seats and 7,287 private seats. Maharashtra has 9,216 seats, with 4,277 government seats and 4,939 private seats, while Tamil Nadu has 8,023 seats, with 3,030 government seats and 4,993 private seats.

The Centre has also announced plans to add 5,000 more postgraduate medical seats between 2025-26 and 2028-29, as part of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for strengthening and upgrading government medical colleges, standalone postgraduate institutes, and government hospitals. The cost ceiling for this scheme has been enhanced to Rs 1.50 crore per seat.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has introduced a regulatory framework to increase the number of postgraduate medical seats, which includes assessing medical colleges based on factors such as the availability of qualified faculty, infrastructure, and clinical material.
