Bhopal Sees Rise in Buprenorphine Abuse

Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, has witnessed a surge in the misuse of Buprenorphine, a powerful opioid injection used to treat severe pain and opioid dependence. The police have arrested several individuals, including Daksh Yadav and Ballu Kuchbundiya, and seized a large quantity of Buprenorphine injection vials, Avil injections, and needles.

The suspects were selling a combination of Buprenorphine and Avil injections for Rs 100 to Rs 150 per dose, which is injected directly into the body using syringes. Addicts claim that a single dose can keep them intoxicated for up to three days, leaving the body numb. The police have found that the addiction has spread rapidly in slum settlements and among people living along roadsides and railway tracks.

According to police officials, the substance is particularly popular among labourers and youths from weaker sections because of its low cost. Sub-Inspector Santosh Raghuwanshi said that the supply chain leads to Uttar Pradesh, where a distributor is allegedly connected to local dealers in Bhopal through Telegram channels.

Experts say that Buprenorphine is prescribed to manage severe pain after surgeries, cancer-related pain, and opioid addiction by reducing withdrawal symptoms. However, police officials emphasize that the drug is regulated under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and cannot be sold or consumed without a valid medical prescription.

In recent months, the police have made several seizures of Buprenorphine injections. On July 19, Chhola Mandir police arrested a woman peddler and seized 44 Buprenorphine injections and 44 Avil injections from her possession. On April 9, Hanumanganj police arrested Rahul Mishra and seized a total of 385 injections from his bag.

Tragically, a youth from Kolar, Akshay, died of an overdose of the same injection two days ago. Police investigation revealed that Akshay had been admitted to a de-addiction programme while in jail but resumed using the injection as an intoxicant after his release.

The rise in Buprenorphine abuse in Bhopal highlights the need for increased awareness and regulation of the drug. The police are working to trace the main distributor and identify the source of the network to curb the spread of the addiction.

The situation in Bhopal is a concern for the entire country, as the misuse of prescription drugs can have severe consequences. It is essential for the authorities to take strict action against those involved in the illegal sale and distribution of Buprenorphine and to provide support and rehabilitation to those affected by the addiction.

In conclusion, the rise in Buprenorphine abuse in Bhopal is a serious issue that requires immediate attention and action. The police, medical professionals, and the community must work together to prevent the spread of the addiction and provide help to those who need it.
