NMIA To Cater 90 MPPA By 2030: CIDCO Vice Chairman

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) will play a crucial role in catering to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region's (MMR) increasing air travel demand of 150 million passengers per annum by 2030, according to City and Industrial Development Corporation's (CIDCO) Vice Chairman Ashwin Mudgal.

The airport currently operates with a single runway and an initial terminal capacity of 20 million passengers per annum (MPPA), with an ultimate target of 90 MPPA. This, combined with the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai, which has a capacity of around 50 MPPA, will form the backbone of MMR's long-term infrastructure.

Mudgal stated that NMIA will cater to the larger demand of 90 MPPA once fully developed, while Mumbai will cater to 50 MPPA. He emphasized that the operationalization of NMIA is a sign that the region is moving in the right direction.

The CIDCO Vice Chairman also mentioned that state planners are looking beyond the Mumbai-Navi Mumbai twin system to proposed greenfield sites in Pune's Purandar and Vadhavan in Palghar, which might become the country's first off-shore airport if approved.

To achieve the target of 90 MPPA, approximately 15 distinct development projects are concurrently active across the NMIA site. These projects include the construction of a second parallel runway, expansion of passenger terminal buildings, establishment of dedicated aircraft maintenance hangars, and development of advanced freight processing zones.

A critical component of NMIA's master plan is the rapid transit connectivity between Navi Mumbai and Mumbai's primary airport. A dedicated metro link, Line-8, also known as the Golden line, is proposed to connect the airport to Sagar Sangam.

Mudgal expressed satisfaction with the progress of NMIA, stating that international flights are gaining momentum, and cargo operations have also started. The current cargo capacity of 0.8 million metric tonnes is expected to increase to over 3 million metric tonnes.

The development of NMIA is expected to drive growth in the region, with the airport emerging as a major hub for air travel in western India. The CIDCO Vice Chairman's vision for NMIA is to create a world-class airport that will cater to the growing demands of the region.

In the coming years, NMIA is expected to play a vital role in meeting the air travel demands of the MMR region. With its ultimate target of 90 MPPA, the airport will contribute significantly to the region's infrastructure development.

The growth of NMIA will also have a positive impact on the regional economy, creating new job opportunities and driving growth in the aviation sector. As the airport continues to expand and develop, it is expected to become a major driver of economic growth in the region.

In conclusion, the development of NMIA is a significant step towards meeting the growing air travel demands of the MMR region. With its ultimate target of 90 MPPA, the airport is expected to play a crucial role in driving economic growth and development in the region.
