Pune Reports 300 Dengue Cases in 6 Weeks

Pune has seen a significant rise in dengue cases with the onset of the monsoon season. Between June and mid-July, 300 suspected cases were reported, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total 473 suspected cases recorded since the beginning of the year.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has identified Kothrud and Karvenagar as areas with a higher concentration of cases. According to PMC data, dengue cases were relatively low during the first five months of 2026, with 25 suspected cases in January, 23 in February, 26 in March, 41 in April, and 58 in May.

However, with the arrival of the monsoon, the number of cases surged to 175 in June. In the first 15 days of July alone, another 125 suspected cases were reported, indicating a steady rise in infections. Health officials attribute the increase to waterlogging caused by continuous rainfall, which has created favourable conditions for the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes that transmit dengue.

The civic health department has urged citizens to be vigilant and not ignore symptoms such as high fever, severe body ache, headache, pain behind the eyes, and fatigue. Residents experiencing these symptoms have been advised to seek medical attention promptly and undergo the necessary diagnostic tests.

Dr Nina Borade, Head of PMC's Health Department, emphasized the importance of preventing water accumulation in and around homes to curb mosquito breeding and reduce the risk of dengue. She advised people to remain alert during the monsoon season and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the disease.
