Retired Army Man Kills Wife, Attacks Son in Pune

A retired Army personnel, Mahendra Shivaji Daundkar, allegedly strangled his wife, Deepa Mahendra Daundkar, to death at their home in Sangam Garden on Wada Road in Khed taluka, Pune. The incident occurred on Sunday night, August 30.

According to the police, the suspect had been arguing with his wife over her refusal to speak to his sisters, Shobha Rode and Kalpana Chaudhary, who live in Airoli, Thane, and Kharegaon-Kalwa, Mumbai, respectively. The couple's 17-year-old son, Arthav Mahendra Daundkar, had dinner with his parents around 9 pm on the night of the incident.

After dinner, Arthav went to meet his friend Rugved Pokharkar on the third floor of the society. Around 11:30 pm, Arthav received a missed call from his mother to his friend's mother, Sushma Pokharkar, and returned home. When he entered the house, his father allegedly told him not to wake his mother as she had taken a tablet and gone to sleep.

However, when Arthav went into the bedroom, he found his mother unresponsive, with a dark blue face and marks on her neck. His father then allegedly entered the bedroom, locked the door, and tried to attack Arthav. The teenager managed to push him aside and rushed into the hall shouting for help.

Mahendra allegedly picked up two knives from the kitchen and threatened Arthav, warning him that he would stab him if he raised an alarm. He allegedly attempted to stab the teenager in the abdomen, but Arthav sustained a cut on his thumb while trying to defend himself.

Arthav's maternal uncle, grandparents, brother, and aunt, who had arrived outside the house, tried to restrain Mahendra. The suspect allegedly pushed his father-in-law and tried to attack Arthav again. The police were informed, and a murder case was registered against Mahendra.

The police said that Mahendra had retired from the Army in 2019 and was working as a security guard at a private company in Vishrantwadi. The family lived in a society where Arthav's maternal grandparents and uncle's family also resided.
