Open Manhole Spotted In Mumbai's Chandivali

A potentially hazardous open manhole without barricades has been spotted in Mumbai's Chandivali area, just days after a similar incident in Saki Naka resulted in a man's death. The uncovered manhole is located on Jama Masjid Road, which connects Sangharsh Nagar Road to Chandivali Farm Road, behind the Vicinia residential complex.

The issue was brought to light by the Chandivali Citizens Welfare Association (CCWA), which shared photographs of the open manhole on social media. The images show pedestrians and vehicles passing close to the manhole, highlighting the risk of accidents.

The CCWA expressed concern over the civic body's negligence, stating that the BMC seems to have not learned from its earlier mistakes. The association's post on social media read, 'BMC doesn't seem to learn from their earlier mistakes. A very deep manhole has been kept open without any barricading or protection.'

This incident comes after the death of Aslam Isak Shaikh, a resident of Andheri East, who fell into an uncovered drain in Saki Naka on July 2. According to police, Shaikh was looking at his mobile phone while walking and failed to notice the open manhole, resulting in the fatal fall.

The repeated occurrence of such incidents raises questions about the BMC's efforts to ensure public safety. The civic body has a responsibility to maintain the city's infrastructure and prevent accidents.

Mumbai has seen several instances of open manholes and uncovered drains in the past, resulting in accidents and fatalities. The city's residents have been demanding better maintenance of the civic infrastructure to prevent such incidents.

The BMC needs to take immediate action to address the issue of open manholes and ensure that all manholes are covered and barricaded to prevent accidents. The civic body must also conduct regular inspections to identify and fix any hazards on the city's roads.

The incident has sparked concern among residents, who are demanding better civic services and infrastructure maintenance. The city's authorities must take note of the concerns and take necessary steps to prevent such incidents in the future.

In the meantime, residents are advised to be cautious while walking on the city's roads and to report any hazards or open manholes to the authorities immediately. The city's safety is a collective responsibility, and everyone must play a role in preventing accidents and ensuring public safety.

The incident highlights the need for better civic governance and infrastructure maintenance in Mumbai. The city's authorities must prioritize public safety and take concrete steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
