London Launches 1st Self-Driving Taxis With Human Safety Drivers

London has become the first city to launch self-driving taxis with human safety drivers, thanks to a partnership between UK-based Wayve Technologies and American multinational Uber. The fleet of self-driving taxis, which includes all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles fitted with the Wayve AI Driver, was launched on Thursday.

The robotaxis are equipped with surround sensors and will initially have a human safety driver behind the wheel to monitor each journey. The driver can take control of the vehicle or apply the brakes when required. Passengers in the UK capital who book UberX, Uber Electric or Uber Comfort rides may be matched, at no additional cost, with one of these self-driving taxis.

According to Alex Kendall, CEO and co-founder of Wayve, the company is proud to introduce the Wayve AI Driver to the public for the first time in London, which is considered one of the most complex driving environments in the world. Fares will be the same as those for standard Uber rides, and passengers will also not be prompted to leave a tip after completing a robotaxi journey.

Wayve's AI Driver uses an “AV2.0” approach, which allows the technology to adapt to complex environments without depending on traditional HD maps or hand-coded rules. The AI Driver learns from experience in a manner similar to humans, making it possible for the technology to navigate complex roads and environments.
