Rajasthan Introduces 'Prasav Sakhi' System

The Rajasthan government has introduced the 'Prasav Sakhi' (Birthing Companion) system in government hospitals to provide better support and care to high-risk pregnant women.

This initiative comes after several maternal deaths were reported in the state over the past few months.

The 'Prasav Sakhi' system was launched as a result of a five-day special campaign that identified 37,558 high-risk pregnant women suffering from complications such as anemia, hypertension, and diabetes.

The campaign examined the records of over 3.56 lakh women to identify those in need of special care.

According to the Medical and Health Department, the 'Prasav Sakhi' system will be implemented in phases across medical college-affiliated hospitals, district hospitals, and First Referral Units (FRUs) with high delivery caseloads.

Trained nursing staff, ANMs, and other female health workers will serve as 'Prasav Sakhis', providing assistance to high-risk pregnant women from admission to discharge.

These 'Prasav Sakhis' will wear pink aprons and will be responsible for coordinating processes such as registration, testing, medical consultation, treatment, and referrals when necessary.

They will also provide information and guidance to patients and their families.

The Principal Secretary of the Medical and Health Department, Gayatri Rathore, stated that 24×7 Maternal and Child Health Help Desks will be established in each designated hospital.

These help desks will serve as the primary point of contact for pregnant women and their families, providing information and support.

The 'Prasav Sakhi' system will be integrated with the '104 Janani Express' and the help desk to ensure safe transportation and seamless service delivery.

High-risk pregnant women will be given priority in both transportation and treatment.

The introduction of the 'Prasav Sakhi' system is a response to the recent maternal deaths reported in government-run hospitals in Kota, Bikaner, Jodhpur, and Banswara.

These deaths prompted the government to initiate the special screening of pregnant women across the state.
