BMC Launches Gen Z Fellowship For 50 Young Professionals

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a 'Gen Z Fellowship Programme' to recruit 50 young professionals into civic administration. This 12-month program offers a monthly stipend of ₹61,500 and provides hands-on exposure to policymaking, project planning, and governance.

The fellows will work alongside senior civic officials, including the municipal commissioner, additional commissioners, mayor, and department heads. Their responsibilities will include policy implementation, data analysis, and monitoring of civic projects.

To be eligible, applicants must be graduates below 28 years of age, proficient in Marathi, Hindi, and English, and have basic computer skills. Applications can be submitted online from August 19 to 31, 2026.

The program is modeled on the Maharashtra government's Chief Minister Fellowship Programme, which aims to bring young professionals into government and provide them with hands-on exposure to public administration.

Godfrey Pimenta, founder of Watchdog Foundation, has welcomed the initiative but expressed that 50 fellowship positions are inadequate for a city of nearly 1.5 crore people. He suggested that the civic body allocate at least 10 fellows per ward, creating 250 positions, to enable wider citizen engagement and better identification of local civic issues.
