Kanpur-Lucknow Expressway Rebuilt Just A Month After Opening

The Kanpur-Lucknow Expressway, which was opened to traffic just a month ago, is already undergoing extensive repairs and rebuilding at several locations. The Uttar Pradesh Home Department has sought a status report from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) regarding the expressway's condition. The most extensive repair work is being carried out on the carriageway from Kanpur towards Lucknow, between kilometre 28 and 35.

Drainage has emerged as a significant concern, with work underway at five locations to improve water discharge. In several places, crash barriers had blocked the drains, preventing proper flow and pushing water towards the road structure. Highway experts warn that poor drainage can weaken the soil beneath the pavement and eventually damage the road surface.

Other defects have been found along the route, including cracks in a bridge, uneven road surfaces, and erosion of soil slopes. A more serious problem has emerged near Niverna in Unnao, where the approach road to a bridge has started showing signs of settlement.

PNC Infratech, the company involved in the construction, has increased repair work following complaints. However, the company's manager, Satya Narayan, downplayed the issues, attributing some defects to the movement of vehicles and construction machinery.

The Home Department has sought information from NHAI on whether the problems have implications for other projects being executed by PNC Infratech. Officials have also asked whether PNC had been debarred from projects.
