FDA Cracks Down On Violators In Pune

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its enforcement efforts in Pune, resulting in a significant surge in actions against violators of food and drug safety laws. Between November 10, 2025, and May 20, 2026, the Pune division handled 1,677 adjudication cases, with 1,208 decided and summons or notices issued in 1,676 cases.

The FDA has recovered ₹4.64 crore in penalties, highlighting the scale of regulatory action initiated over the past several months. Since Tukaram Mundhe assumed charge as Maharashtra FDA commissioner on May 25, the department has launched a statewide enforcement drive targeting various establishments.

One of the notable actions taken by the FDA was against Metro Blood Bank at Aundh District Hospital, whose licence was suspended due to multiple regulatory lapses. The inspection revealed that blood component processing continued despite the resignation of the approved technical supervisor in March 2025, without a replacement receiving statutory approval.

The FDA also conducted a special enforcement drive between July 8 and July 12, resulting in the seizure of products worth over ₹37 lakh. During this drive, officials intercepted a milk tanker carrying milk from a manufacturing unit in Sangola, Solapur district, and destroyed 28,498 litres of suspected adulterated milk as a precautionary measure.

In another instance, a café on Salunkhe Vihar Road in Kondhwa Khurd was shut down due to expired food and poor hygiene. The inspection revealed several shortcomings in compliance with mandatory food safety and hygiene requirements, leading to the suspension of the establishment's food licence.

The FDA has also taken action against unlicensed Ayurvedic medicines worth over ₹50 lakh and counterfeit cosmetics, including counterfeit Cetaphil skin cleanser. These actions demonstrate the FDA's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of consumers in Pune.

The crackdown on violators is part of a broader statewide review, which has resulted in the suspension of licences of 21 blood centres, including 10 facilities in Pune district.
