Pune Leads Maharashtra In Unhygienic Food Complaints

Pune district has reported the highest number of complaints about unhygienic food in Maharashtra, according to FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. This information was revealed during a food safety conference in Pune, where Mundhe spoke about the recently launched complaint-reporting portal.

The portal, available at complaints.mahafda.in, allows people to register their complaints concerning food items. Since its launch, thousands of complaints have been registered, with 10 lakh hits recorded within 24 hours. The majority of these complaints are from Pune district and concern unhygienic food.

Mundhe stated that the new system will bring in accountability and transparency. The FDA joint commissioner will take cognisance of a registered complaint within 24 hours and assign it to an officer. If necessary action is not taken within the stipulated time, the complaint will be automatically escalated to a senior in the department.

The FDA has been intensifying its crackdown on food businesses in Maharashtra since Mundhe took charge in May. Inspections have been conducted at multiple hotels, restaurants, and dhabas. The agency has also suspended the food business licence of Mumbai-based Parsi Dairy Farm and a canteen operating at Mumbai's KEM Hospital due to serious food safety and hygiene violations.

Mundhe urged hotels and other establishments to comply with food safety management systems and follow all 22 major regulations prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The FDA is also exploring the use of blockchain technology to maintain records of entities against which action has been taken in the past.

The Maharashtra FDA has been actively working to ensure food safety in the state. Recently, the agency destroyed 24,632 litres of suspected adulterated milk and 14,064 kg of dairy products in statewide raids across Latur, Nashik, Pune, and Solapur. FIRs were registered, and licences were suspended.

The FDA's efforts to improve food safety are crucial for the well-being of Maharashtra's residents. With the new complaint-reporting portal and increased inspections, the agency is taking significant steps towards ensuring that food businesses in the state maintain high standards of hygiene and safety.

The issue of unhygienic food is a significant concern in Maharashtra, and the FDA's actions are a step in the right direction. By holding food businesses accountable and providing a platform for citizens to report complaints, the agency is working towards creating a safer food environment in the state.

In conclusion, the FDA's efforts to improve food safety in Maharashtra are noteworthy. With the highest number of complaints about unhygienic food coming from Pune district, it is clear that there is a need for increased vigilance and action in this area. The FDA's use of technology, such as the complaint-reporting portal and blockchain, will help to bring in transparency and accountability, ultimately benefiting the residents of Maharashtra.

The significance of this issue extends beyond Pune and Maharashtra, as food safety is a concern that affects the entire country. The FDA's actions in Maharashtra can serve as a model for other states to follow, and its efforts to improve food safety can have a positive impact on the health and well-being of people across India.
