Sensex Falls 188 Points to 77,966

The Indian stock market ended lower for the second consecutive session on Wednesday, with the Sensex declining 187.90 points to close at 77,966.35 and the Nifty falling 35.75 points to settle at 24,435.95.

This decline was largely due to firm crude oil prices and uncertainty over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which kept investors cautious.

Higher crude prices are generally negative for India, as the country imports most of its oil requirements, and can lead to increased inflation, import costs, and a wider trade deficit.

The Nifty IT index was the worst-performing sectoral gauge, falling 1.54 percent, with Tata Consultancy Services, Max Healthcare Institute, and Apollo Hospitals Enterprise being among the biggest losers.

However, buying in public-sector bank shares helped limit the market's overall decline, with the Nifty PSU Bank index advancing 2 percent.

The broader market ended on a mixed note, with the Nifty MidCap index gaining 0.28 percent and the Nifty SmallCap index slipping 0.18 percent.

Market experts noted that the Nifty found support near its 200-hour simple moving average and closed above its 20-day exponential moving average.

A sustained fall below 24,400 could drag the index towards 24,180, while a firm move above 24,500 may improve the near-term trend.

Investors are now awaiting the US inflation report, which could influence expectations around the Federal Reserve's future interest-rate policy and determine the direction of global markets.

The decline in the Indian stock market is a significant development, as it reflects the cautious sentiment of investors amidst global economic uncertainty.

The impact of crude oil prices on the Indian economy is a key concern, and the market will likely remain volatile until there is more clarity on the global energy supply situation.

Overall, the decline in the Sensex and Nifty is a reminder of the complexities and challenges of the global economy, and the need for investors to remain vigilant and informed.
