Army Officer Alleges Harassment During Mumbai Marathon

A serving woman Army officer has filed a complaint with the Azad Maidan Police Station in Mumbai, alleging that she was stalked and harassed by a man during the Mumbai Full Marathon held on January 18, 2026. The officer claimed that she encountered the accused, a lieutenant colonel from Jalandhar, approximately two kilometres before the finish line. She stated that he called out to her and attempted to approach her through the crowd of runners, prompting her to increase her pace and avoid interaction.

The officer, who has an ongoing legal dispute with the accused, alleged that this incident was not isolated and formed part of a continuing pattern of harassment and stalking. She claimed that he had previously posted photographs of her online alongside himself in an attempt to damage her reputation. An FIR had earlier been registered against him on September 29, 2023, at a police station in Kolkata, in connection with allegations of harassment and stalking.

The officer also reported incidents of stalking in Dehradun on September 8, 2025, and again on March 10, 2026. She claimed to possess evidence relating to those incidents and said an FIR had also been registered with the Dehradun Police. The incident during the Mumbai Full Marathon has caused her immense fear, mental distress, and a persistent sense of insecurity.

The officer had approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court and had been provided security by the Punjab Police following orders issued by the court. However, the security arrangement is restricted to the jurisdiction of Punjab. She is presently posted in a field area and, due to the confidential nature of her duties, is unable to appear personally before the Mumbai Police to record her statement. She has requested that her written statement be taken on record and that appropriate legal action be initiated on its basis.

The Mumbai Police have registered a complaint and are investigating the matter. The accused is currently out on bail, and proceedings seeking cancellation of his bail are pending before a court in Alipore, Kolkata. The incident highlights the need for increased security and protection for victims of stalking and harassment, particularly those who are serving in the armed forces.

The case is a disturbing reminder of the risks and challenges faced by women in the armed forces, who often have to deal with harassment and stalking while serving their country. The Mumbai Police and other authorities must take swift and decisive action to ensure that the accused is brought to justice and that the officer is provided with adequate protection and support.

In the meantime, the officer's complaint has sparked concerns about the safety and security of participants in public events like the Mumbai Full Marathon. The organizers and authorities must take steps to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future and that participants feel safe and secure while participating in such events.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the Mumbai Police are working to gather evidence and build a strong case against the accused. The officer's bravery and determination in coming forward and reporting the incident are commendable, and it is hoped that her complaint will lead to justice and accountability for the accused.
