Assam CM Criticizes Opposition to Development Projects
Assam CM slams left-liberal opposition, urges competitive federalism.

Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a sharp attack on the opposition to development projects in the state, accusing them of opposing initiatives by default.
The Chief Minister made these remarks while replying to the budget debate on the eighth day of the Assembly's budget session in Guwahati. He emphasized that Assam cannot afford to fall behind in the race for growth and development.
Sarma argued that India has entered an era of competitive federalism, where states that are willing to reform and industrialize will receive greater support from the Centre. He stated that states pursuing industrialization, higher exports, full literacy, and power-surplus status would benefit more from central assistance.
The Chief Minister also cautioned that neighboring Northeastern states are moving ahead aggressively with their own development agendas, and Assam needs to continue reforms to maintain its lead in the region. He highlighted the importance of direct benefit transfer (DBT) schemes in reducing poverty in Assam, citing a significant decrease in the multidimensional poverty rate from 32.67% in 2015 to 14.47% currently.
Sarma claimed that the government's goal is to bring the poverty rate down to a single digit and emphasized the role of direct cash benefit transfer in poverty alleviation. He also mentioned that welfare schemes such as Orunodoi, Nijut Moina, and free foodgrain distribution have contributed significantly to poverty reduction.
The Chief Minister acknowledged the assistance from the Union government, which has enabled Assam to undertake major projects, including the Kaziranga elevated corridor and the proposed underground tunnel through the Brahmaputra. He warned of strict action against those creating hurdles in development projects, alleging that people influenced by Left ideology are trying to obstruct such initiatives.
Sarma rejected the Opposition's charge that the budget was a “copy-paste” exercise, stating that it reflects the BJP-led government's continuing vision for Assam's development. He urged MLAs across party lines to encourage entrepreneurship and support the government's development initiatives.
The Chief Minister's remarks come at a time when Assam is pushing for rapid development and growth, with a focus on industrialization, infrastructure development, and poverty alleviation. His emphasis on competitive federalism highlights the need for states to be proactive in pursuing development agendas and attracting central assistance.
In conclusion, the Assam Chief Minister's criticism of the opposition to development projects and his emphasis on competitive federalism underscore the importance of proactive governance and development initiatives in driving growth and reducing poverty in the state. This approach is likely to have significant implications for Assam's development trajectory and its position in the region.
The state's focus on industrialization, infrastructure development, and poverty alleviation is expected to yield positive results, with the government's goal of bringing the poverty rate down to a single digit being a key target. As Assam continues to push for rapid development and growth, it remains to be seen how the opposition will respond to the Chief Minister's criticism and how the state will navigate the challenges and opportunities of competitive federalism.
