Mumbai-Savantwadi Express Launched to Boost Konkan Tourism

The Mumbai-Savantwadi Express was launched on Thursday, with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde flagging off the inaugural service from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.

The launch of the daily train service is expected to boost tourism and connectivity in the Konkan region, particularly with the upcoming Ganeshotsav festival.

Shinde stated that the new service would strengthen rail connectivity between Mumbai and Konkan, benefiting thousands of people travelling to their native places for the festival.

He also mentioned that improved connectivity would make Konkan's beaches, forts, and cultural attractions more accessible to tourists, providing a boost to local tourism and employment opportunities.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw attended the event virtually and announced that around Rs 18,000 crore worth of projects are underway to augment Mumbai's suburban railway capacity.

The number of daily local train services is expected to rise to 3,500 by 2030, with 350 special trains being operated this year to meet the increased demand during the festive season.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal also attended the event virtually and stated that the Savantwadi Express would connect millions of families in Konkan, benefiting passengers from Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg.

The train will operate between CSMT and Sawantwadi Road, with halts at major stations including Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Ratnagiri, Kankavli, and Kudal.
